The second most common symptom of TMD is postural pain. The misalignment of TMJ causes tension in jaw muscles as they work hard to compensate for this misalignment. This may lead to spasm or tension in neck and shoulder muscles.
The result is real or referred pain to the surrounding areas of temporomandibular joint like:
- Pain in Shoulders
- Pain in Neck
- Pain in Back
- Pain behind the Eyes
- Pain in Teeth
Referred pain of a triggered patient is the most common secondary symptom of neuromuscular disorder caused due to the faulty position of the mandible. The pain behind the eye can be caused due to a triggered point from as far as the trapezius muscle in the neck. The head and neck muscles are all connected to each other by one way or another. The ear pain could be caused due to a middle ear muscle which are innervated by the mandibular nerve that supplies the muscles of mastication also.
